Free Things to Do in Denali National Park (That Are Actually Amazing)

From scenic hikes and wildlife viewing to ranger-led programs and free shuttles, you don’t need a big budget to have a big Alaska experience.

🥾 Front Country Hiking Trails

One of the easiest ways to experience Denali is right on foot. The park offers several maintained trails near the entrance, perfect for all skill levels.
Horseshoe Lake Trail (Easy | 1.5 miles round trip)
A guest favorite for a reason. This peaceful loop leads to a beautiful lake where you might spot beavers, moose, or waterfowl.
Location: About 1.5 miles from the park entrance
How to get there: Take the free shuttle to the Denali Visitor Center, then walk to the trailhead
Mount Healy Overlook Trail (Moderate to Strenuous | 4.5 miles round trip)
Looking for a little more adventure? This trail climbs steadily and rewards you with sweeping views of the Alaska Range.
Location: Near the Denali Visitor Center
How to get there: Shuttle to the Visitor Center, short walk to the trailhead
Savage River Loop Trail (Easy | 2 miles loop)
This is one of the best “bang for your buck” hikes in Denali—and yes, it’s still free.
Location: Mile 15 of Denali Park Road
How to get there: Ride the free Savage River Shuttle

Many visitors don’t realize you can explore Denali beyond the entrance without paying for a bus tour. The free Savage River Shuttle runs the first 15 miles of the park road and stops at:
Denali Visitor Center
Horseshoe Lake Trail
Scenic viewpoints
Savage River

You don’t need a tour to see wildlife in Denali.
