The Denali Park Road is reopening, adventures to Kantishna are returning, and 2027 promises to be an exciting year to explore Alaska's most iconic national park.

If you've been dreaming of visiting Denali National Park, 2027 may be the perfect year to make that dream a reality!

After more than five years of limited access to the park's remote interior, the completion of the Pretty Rocks Bridge has paved the way for the anticipated reopening of the full 92-mile Denali Park Road.

For visitors, this means the expected return of access to spectacular destinations, including Polychrome Pass, Wonder Lake, and historic Kantishna.

Whether you're planning your first Alaska adventure or returning to explore more of the park, here's what you need to know about visiting Denali in 2027.

1. The Big News: Denali Park Road Reopens in 2027

In August 2021, a rapidly accelerating landslide at Pretty Rocks, near Mile 45, forced the National Park Service to close the Denali Park Road beyond the East Fork River area.

For five years, park buses could travel only about 43 miles into the park, less than half the distance to Kantishna.

In September 2026, the National Park Service announced the completion of the new 475-foot Pretty Rocks Bridge, allowing preparations to begin for the return of visitors to the park's western interior.

What does this mean for your 2027 Denali vacation?

Visitors can look forward to the anticipated return of bus access to some of Denali's most memorable destinations:

  • Polychrome Pass: Colorful mountainsides, sweeping tundra, and dramatic wilderness scenery.

  • Toklat River: A beautiful glacial river valley surrounded by rugged mountains.

  • Eielson Area: Spectacular views deep within the park, with visitor services subject to availability.

  • Wonder Lake: One of Denali's most photographed destinations, offering incredible mountain views on clear days.

  • Kantishna: A historic gold-mining district near the end of the park road, approximately 92 miles from the entrance.

The National Park Service anticipates full bus service returning in summer 2027, although exact opening dates, destinations, and services remain subject to change.

One of the most exciting opportunities returning in 2027 is the chance to travel all the way to Kantishna.

Located at the western end of the Denali Park Road, this remote destination offers visitors a chance to experience Alaska's wilderness far beyond the busy park entrance.

The journey takes you through changing landscapes, from boreal forests and braided rivers to open tundra, alpine terrain, and breathtaking mountain scenery.

Keep your eyes open for Denali's famous wildlife, including grizzly bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep, and occasionally wolves.

For travelers wanting to experience the full length of the park road, the Denali Backcountry Adventure is an exciting option expected to return in 2027.

This approximately 13-hour guided excursion travels deep into Denali National Park, with a knowledgeable driver-guide sharing stories about the park's wildlife, natural history, and landscapes.

The planned experience includes wildlife viewing opportunities, spectacular scenery, a family-style lunch at Denali Backcountry Lodge, and activities such as botanical walks, gold panning, and stories of Alaska's homesteading history.

Rates starting at $339 per person.

It's a full-day adventure, but for travelers wanting to experience the remote western reaches of Denali, it may be one of the highlights of their Alaska vacation.

3. Which Denali National Park Bus Tour Should You Choose?

One of the most common questions we hear from guests is, "What's the best way to see Denali National Park?"

The answer depends on how much time you have, how far into the park you want to travel, and whether you prefer a guided experience or the flexibility to explore independently.

Tundra Wilderness Tour

Best for: Visitors who want a narrated sightseeing and wildlife experience.

The Tundra Wilderness Tour features a knowledgeable driver-naturalist who shares information about Denali's history, geology, plants, and wildlife.

The tour includes scenic stops, opportunities to spot wildlife, and onboard narration.

With the reopening of the park road, longer itineraries are expected to return in 2027. Plan on approximately 7–8 hours for the longer tour, depending on the final schedule.

Denali Transit Buses

Best for: Independent travelers, hikers, photographers, and budget-conscious visitors.

Denali's non-narrated transit buses offer a flexible and economical way to explore the park.

Passengers can get off at permitted locations to hike, photograph the scenery, or simply enjoy the wilderness, then catch another transit bus when seating is available.

Transit bus drivers also stop for wildlife sightings and scenic views, although they don't provide the formal narration of guided tours.

With the reopening, transit routes farther into the park are expected to return in 2027.

Our tip: Bring food, water, and extra layers. If you plan to get off the bus, allow plenty of time for your return, as reboarding depends on available seating.

Denali Backcountry Adventure

Best for: Travelers wanting to experience the entire park road and visit Kantishna.

This full-day narrated adventure offers the opportunity to travel approximately 92 miles into Denali and enjoy an experience in the historic Kantishna area.

It's an excellent choice for visitors who want to make the most of the park road reopening.

Planning ahead: You can book the Denali Backcountry Adventure NOW, The Tundra Wilderness Tour and the East Fork Transit bus can be booked beginning December 1st.

4. Can You Drive Your Own Vehicle Into Denali?

Although the park road is reopening, private vehicles will be restricted to the first 15 miles of the park road.

To explore farther into Denali, visitors must use authorized transportation.

But don't overlook those first 15 miles! The paved portion of the park road offers beautiful scenery, wildlife viewing, and wonderful opportunities to explore at your own pace. Some of our favorite activities include visiting the Denali Visitor Center, driving to Savage River, walking the Savage River Loop Trail, and enjoying the incredible scenery along the way.

For a different experience, consider exploring by E-Bike. E-biking allows you to enjoy the landscape at your own pace, stop for photographs, and experience the park from a completely different perspective. READ this on E-Biking.

5. When Is the Best Time to Visit Denali in 2027?

Denali's main visitor season generally runs from mid-May through mid-September, and each part of the season offers something special.

  • May to Early June: Long daylight hours, snow-covered peaks, and the arrival of spring make this a beautiful time to visit. Some tours and destinations may not open until later in the season.

  • Mid-June Through July: These are some of Denali's most popular travel weeks, offering exceptionally long days, wildflowers, hiking, and a full selection of seasonal activities.

  • August: One of our favorite times in Denali! Berries ripen, the tundra begins changing color, and the landscape gradually transitions toward fall. Late August and into September there is always a chance to see the Norther Lights!

  • Early September: Brilliant autumn colors, cooler temperatures, and fewer visitors make this a wonderful time for photography and wildlife viewing, and lets not forget the chance to see the Northern Lights.

Regardless of when you visit, remember that Alaska weather can change quickly, and mountain views are never guaranteed.

6. How Many Days Should You Spend in Denali?

We recommend planning at least three nights in the Denali area, especially if you're hoping to experience the park road reopening. Denali is so much more than a single bus tour!

With three nights, you can dedicate one full day to exploring the national park, another day to local adventures, and still have time to relax and enjoy your surroundings.

Here's a simple itinerary:

  • Day 1: Arrive and Relax

Enjoy the scenic drive to Denali, settle into your cabin, and unwind beside Carlo Creek.

  • Day 2: Explore Denali National Park

Spend the day on a narrated wilderness tour, transit bus adventure, or full-day journey to Kantishna.

  • Day 3: Discover More of Denali

Visit an Alaskan husky kennel, take a guided nature walk, enjoy a rafting adventure, or explore the park by e-bike.

  • Day 4: Breakfast and Departure

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before continuing your Alaska adventure.

If your schedule allows, adding another night provides extra flexibility for weather and sightseeing.

7. Where to Stay When Visiting Denali National Park

Choosing where to stay can make a big difference in your Denali experience.

While many visitors initially look for lodging immediately outside the park entrance, staying a little farther away offers a quieter and more relaxed Alaska experience.

8. Our Local Tips for Planning Your 2027 Denali Vacation

After welcoming visitors to Denali for nearly three decades, we've learned a few things that can make your visit even better.

  • Book early. Summer is short in Denali, and popular accommodations and tours can fill quickly.

  • Reserve your bus tours in advance. Interest in longer trips and Kantishna adventures may be especially strong in 2027.

  • Pack layers. Even on sunny summer days, temperatures can be chilly, and rain is always possible.

  • Bring binoculars and a camera. Wildlife may be spotted at a distance, and the scenery is spectacular.

  • Pack food and water. Many park excursions last several hours, with limited dining options inside the park.

  • Allow extra time. Wildlife sightings, weather, and road conditions can affect travel schedules.
