26th Annual Carlo Creek Chili Cook-Off: A Celebration of Food, Music, and Community in Denali. When the snow finally melts, the rivers run high, and Denali National Park reopens its gates, Alaskans know it’s time to celebrate. And for the community of Carlo Creek, just 15 minutes south of the park entrance, that celebration means one thing: the Carlo Creek Chili Cook-Off.

On Saturday, May 16, 2026, the event marks its 26th year, bringing together locals, travelers, and chili lovers for one of Alaska’s most anticipated spring traditions. Hosted at McKinley Creekside Cabins & Café, the cook-off is part chili competition, part creekside festival, and part family reunion—with live music, dancing, a roaring bonfire, great food, and drinks to match.

But the Chili Cook-Off isn’t just about one night. It’s a whole weekend event, with early check-in at Creekside on Friday, the first Prime Rib Dinner of the summer, and a Sunday filled with brunch, relaxation, and late checkout.

Whether you’re a local defending your chili title, a traveler discovering Denali for the first time, or a repeat visitor who times your vacation around the event, the Carlo Creek Chili Cook-Off is a tradition you won’t want to miss.

Live music sets the tone at the Carlo Creek Chili Cook-Off, where local bands bring energy, dancing, and Alaskan spirit to the celebration.

The Carlo Creek Chili Cook-Off began in 1998, when a friendly debate between neighbors over who made the best chili turned into an impromptu competition. Pots bubbled, spoons clanged, and when the bowls were empty, everyone agreed on one thing: this should happen again.

And it did. Every year, more friends, families, and eventually visitors joined in. Soon, it wasn’t just a cook-off—it was an annual tradition that marked the unofficial start of summer in Denali.

In the 26 years since, the cook-off has only been canceled a few times: once when a late-season snowstorm made gathering impossible, and again in 2020 and 2021, when COVID paused the festivities. But those interruptions only made the event stronger. Today, it’s bigger, livelier, and more beloved than ever.

The Chili: Creativity in Every Bowl

Behind the scenes at the Carlo Creek Chili Cook-Off — contestants stir up their best recipes in hopes of winning the grand prize. One of the best things about the Chili Cook-Off is the sheer variety of recipes. No two pots are ever the same.

Expect to taste:

  • Classic beef and bean chilis, rich and hearty with bold spices.

  • Wild game creations, featuring moose, caribou, or reindeer sausage for an Alaskan twist.

  • Vegetarian and vegan options, brimming with beans, lentils, and fresh vegetables.

  • Creative experiments, from chipotle-honey blends to smoky-maple surprises.

Visitors wander booth to booth, sampling entries, chatting with the chefs, and casting votes for their favorites. And once the judging is done, the chili feed begins—because everyone deserves a bowl (or three).

More Than Chili: A Festival by the Creek

The cook-off is about much more than food. It’s a full festival atmosphere by the banks of Carlo Creek, complete with:

  • Live Music: Local bands and regional acts keep the energy high with a mix of folk, bluegrass, rock, and Americana.

  • Dancing: Once the music starts, the grass becomes the dance floor, and everyone is welcome.

  • Bonfire: A blazing fire warms hands and sparks laughter late into the evening.

  • Drinks for Everyone: Beer, wine, and Creekside’s own Creek Cider pair perfectly with chili. Non-alcoholic options are also available, making it a family-friendly celebration.

The mix of food, fire, music, and community creates an atmosphere that is both festive and welcoming—the kind of gathering where strangers become friends before the night is over.
