1.     Layered Clothing: Alaska's weather can change quickly, so pack a variety of clothing layers, including a base layer and a waterproof outer shell. This will allow you to layer up or down depending on the various conditions. Weather conditions can change rapidly and may do so throughout the day, so layering up and down is important for exploring comfortably.  My husband always says, “Don’t let the weather dictate what you do, only what you wear.”

2.     Waterproof Boots or walking shoes: Sturdy, waterproof boots or walking shoes with good traction are essential for hiking, exploring, or simply navigating uneven, or wet and muddy terrain.

3.     Rain Gear: A high-quality rain jacket and rain pants will keep you dry during rainy days or while on boat tours.

4.     Warm Hat and Gloves: Even in the summer, evenings in Alaska can get chilly, or if the wind picks up, pack a warm hat and gloves to stay comfortable.  Being prepared for the various elements you may encounter will ensure nothing stands in your way of enjoying all Alaska has to offer, including the unpredictable weather conditions.

5.     Mosquito Repellent: Summer is the season when mosquitoes can be quite pesky. Bring a reliable insect repellent to avoid bites. Most stores offer commercially produced repellents and many boutiques will have locally produced and all natural products.

6.     Binoculars and Camera: To capture Alaska’s stunning landscapes and wildlife bring a pair of binoculars and a camera.  If using a traditional camera, bring extra batteries and memory cards.

7.     Backpack/Daypack: A comfortable daypack is handy for carrying essentials like water, bug spray, snacks, extra clothing layers, and your camera and binoculars while exploring. Remember to pack out anything you bring into the backcountry.  #leavenotrace

8.     Bear Spray AND Bear Bells: If you plan to hike or camp in bear country, which is pretty much everywhere, both bear bells and bear spray can help keep you safe if used properly.  Bear Bells are an excellent precaution to alert wildlife of your presence and help avoid the need for bear spray which can be a crucial safety tool when used properly. Watch: How to use Bear Spray Safely and Properly.

9.     Reusable Water Bottle: Bring a reusable water bottle or buy one as a keep sake.  It will help you stay hydrated while reducing waste.

10.  Adventurous Attitude:  Last and most important, have an adventurous and flexible attitude.  Alaska is a vast and majestic wilderness paradise, but it is also a land of extremes. So, attitude and preparedness will allow you to get the most out of your time in our beautiful state.
